We learned about the cave of Lascaux, how it was discovered by some kids and their dog, and how the cave paintings inside. We discussed how the most commonly depicted animals were horses, deer, and bison, commonly depicted hunting tools, and the different painting techniques cavemen and cavewomen used.
First
graders then drew thick lines using charcoal pencils on tan paper.
They drew either bison, deer, or horses, along with different hunting
tools and then colored with chalk. Once finished, I offered a
"challenge activity:" I left scrap cardboard and yarn for the kids to
try to create their own hunting tools (some kids found it difficult to
attach pieces without glue or tape, but eventually got the hang of it!).
I took the challenge activity products and hung them from the ceiling in front of the cave drawing display.
