In this two part lesson, we first read The Magic Hat by Mem Fox and created our own "magic hat" using watercolors, sparkles, and a feather. Then the kindergarteners learned how to create a self portrait with basic proportion techniques, using a pencil and ruler. I encouraged the kids to think about what they actually look like and then choose colors and shapes to match. Some of the portraits below look like the actual students, others are a bit more abstract and imaginative.
